What is mental health coaching?
At its heart, mental health coaching is about helping clients move forward and create meaningful changes for a better tomorrow. As a coach I recognise that you are the expert on you. During our sessions I will be able to provide lifestyle medicine advice, use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy tools. Diagnosing and prescribing are beyond my scope, should you require these services you will need to visit a registered health professional. The coaching relationship exists to facilitate the creation and development of goals and enable you to develop an action plan/strategy to achieve them.

What are some realistic expectations of a mental health coach?
As a PREKURE certified Mental Health Coach, I undergo an annual recertification process that includes engaging in ten hours of Continued Professional Development (CPD) and at least four annual Coaching Supervision sessions to ensure my knowledge and skills remain current.
Mental health coaching incorporates coaching, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy tools, and related lifestyle medicine. These are all within my scope of practice and are tools I will use during our coaching sessions. As a mental health coach, I am not licensed to diagnose clients, prescribe medication or advise clients to alter their treatment plan from their usual healthcare provider. I can, however, offer support and guidance on how you might go about having these conversations with your healthcare provider. As a mental health coach, I am future-focused and although I take a trauma-informed approach to my work, delving into past trauma or psychological injuries is beyond my scope. If during our sessions I recognise that therapy may be a worthwhile and meaningful intervention for you, I may initiate a conversation about referring you on to a suitably qualified health care professional.
What will we do in a typical coaching session?
Each meeting, we’ll begin with a brief chat about where things are at, gain some insight and consider new options. We’ll explore and work through these, to develop a new set of actions for the coming week. Each session, we will be working together to create tangible progress toward your goal. Mental health coaching may include values and communication-style clarifying questions, making empowering requests and holding you accountable to commitments, and exploring acceptance and commitment therapy tools that you can implement in your daily life.
As you have primarily engaged me for mental health coaching, I will at times give you specific and/or expert advice, information and solutions, however you remain in control and responsible for all choices and decisions.
What is the coach-client relationship?
As a health coach:
It is my desire to facilitate real value for you in my health coaching role. My aim is for to you to take ownership of your own health future and move positively towards your own personal health goals and aspirations.
